Taking time to ask questions is part of being a good keeper.
Is a sulcata a long-term commitment?+
Yes. Sulcatas grow into large tortoises and can live for many decades. Plan for adult space, ongoing costs, veterinary care, and a future caregiver. Read the planning guide.
Can sulcatas hibernate?+
Sulcatas do not hibernate. They need an appropriate winter care and housing plan. A reptile veterinarian can help tailor that plan. Prepare for colder weather.
Does fee-free adoption mean free care?+
No. There is no adoption charge or required donation in a fee-free placement, but the keeper still needs to budget for housing, food, heating, and veterinary care.
Is this veterinary advice?+
Our articles provide general education. Your tortoise’s age, health, and environment matter. Consult a veterinarian who treats reptiles for individual care and health concerns.
