Think beyond the first enclosure
A young sulcata comes with a much larger future. Adults can exceed 100 pounds, and their lives can span many decades. Before adopting, consider the space and resources the adult will need, including secure housing and access to a veterinarian who treats tortoises.
Make the practical plan
Write down who can care for your tortoise when you travel, how you would transport a large animal for veterinary visits, and who could help if your circumstances change. Budget for food, housing, heating, and veterinary care. Revisit the plan as your tortoise grows. Preparing for needs that are years away is part of responsible ownership.
